Oreo’s story began with a second chance. She found a loving home with children’s author John Doriot, and together they began a remarkable journey—sharing stories, visiting classrooms, and bringing the joy of reading to children throughout our community.

For 17 years, Oreo was far more than John’s faithful companion. She became the inspiration for his books, a beloved friend to young readers, and an unforgettable part of every classroom she visited. Wherever John and Oreo went, they brought with them laughter, wonder, and the simple magic of a good story.

And now, Oreo’s story will continue.

Through the extraordinary generosity of John Doriot, every kindergarten child in every school served by RISE Augusta will receive an Oreo book of their very own for years to come.

As RISE Augusta grows, Oreo’s legacy will grow with us. By placing books into the hands of children and opening doors to imagination, discovery, and a lifelong love of reading. Oreo was given a second chance, and through the life she shared with John, she gave so much in return like joy, companionship, laughter, stories, and memories that will long be treasured.

Though Oreo is no longer here to walk into a classroom beside John, her adventures will continue to arrive in the hands and hearts of children year after year. With every book opened, every story shared, and every new reader inspired, Oreo’s legacy will live on.
