Service Above Self, One Story at a Time
At RISE Augusta, we often talk about the power of literacy to change lives. This month, we are celebrating a special group of community leaders who are helping make that change possible, members of the Augusta Rotary Club.
Rotarians are known for their commitment to “Service Above Self” a motto that encourages putting the needs of others first and investing in stronger communities. While many people associate Rotary with community projects, scholarships, and civic leadership, some of the most meaningful service happens through simple things like reading a book to a child.
Throughout the year, Augusta Rotary members have shared their time, voices, and hearts by reading to children in our schools and programs. Whether gathered in a classroom, seated in a library corner, or appearing in special video recordings, these volunteers bring stories to life and help children discover the joy of reading.
Research consistently shows that reading aloud to children is one of the most important activities adults can do to support literacy development. Children who are regularly read to develop stronger vocabularies, improved listening skills, greater comprehension, and a deeper love of books. Reading together also helps children build confidence and creates positive associations with learning.
But the benefits extend far beyond academics.
For many children, especially those facing challenges associated with poverty or limited resources, being read to sends a powerful message. A story shared by a caring adult can spark imagination, encourage curiosity, and open doors to worlds a child may never have imagined. It can also create treasured memories that last long after the final page is turned.
Many Rotarians have shared that they receive just as much joy from the experience as the children do. There is something special about seeing a child’s eyes light up at a favorite character, hearing laughter during a funny scene, or watching a reluctant reader become excited about a new book.
As you watch the accompanying videos and hear the stories from our Rotary readers, we hope you’ll be inspired by the simple yet profound impact of reading aloud.
To our friends at the Augusta Rotary Club, thank you for demonstrating “Service Above Self” in such a meaningful way. Your willingness to share your time, your voice, and your love of reading is helping children build stronger literacy skills, greater confidence, and brighter futures.
One book. One story. One child at a time. And that is service at its very best.
