From Struggles to Success: How Support Helped Jackson
Jackson was a sweet, playful boy, but instability defined much of his young life. After switching schools 12 times before 5th grade, he struggled academically, reading at a second-grade level. His behavior often disrupted class — a defense mechanism to mask his learning struggles. On top of that, he’d lost his glasses the previous year, and his mother couldn’t afford replacements. Feeling defeated, Jackson thought he was “dumb.”
RISE Augusta was asked to help, so together with his teacher and the school counselor a plan to holistic support Jackson was developed. Twice a week, Jackson met with his RISE tutor for remediation and one-on-one tutoring. Understanding the critical need for clear vision, RISE also arranged for an eye exam and the resulting pair of free glasses. Jackson actually needed bi-focals as did his sister and brother!
The results were remarkable. With the right support and encouragement, Jackson’s grades and behavior steadily improved. As he gained confidence, his mother became more engaged with his education. By year’s end, Jackson stood proudly before his peers, honored by the school principal for “Exceptional Academic Growth.”
