Helping a Child Find Her Voice
At RISE Augusta, we believe every child holds extraordinary potential—sometimes they just need a helping hand. Whether meeting basic needs, delivering early literacy programs, or equipping teens with real-world skills, we invest in students before they become another statistic. Our goal - brighter futures!
Helping a Child Find Her Voice
What the Research Says
Students who read by choice earn higher grades in English, math, science, and history. (Sam Houston State University)
Parent Tip
Ask open-ended questions when reading with your child.
“What do you think will happen next?” “Why did that character do that?”
These questions build deeper comprehension and confidence.
Kerena’s Story — Becoming Brave
When third-grader Kerena began tutoring with RISE Augusta, she could barely whisper her answers. She hid behind her hair, avoided eye contact, and struggled with vocabulary and ending sounds. She was so afraid to make a mistake.
Her tutor used pictures, drawing, and visual cues to help her connect the story to meaning. With every success—no matter how small—Kerena softened. Then she began to open up and following that she blossomed! Today, she chats freely, volunteers to read to read to her tutor and out loud in class. She’s making remarkable academic gains. Her teacher is thrilled with her achievements.
Your Gift Matters
Your generosity helped Kerena find her voice, both on the page and in herself.
Please consider a year-end gift to help more children discover their courage through reading.
