Don’t Let Summer Steal the Progress

For children, summer is a time for fun, family, and much-needed relaxation. But it can also brings

something educators call the “summer slide” —the loss of academic skills that often occurs

when children are away from the classroom for several months.

Research shows that many students lose a significant portion of the reading and math gains they worked so hard to achieve during the school year. For struggling readers, that loss can make returning to school even more challenging.

The good news? Preventing the summer slide doesn’t require hours of worksheets or formal

lessons. Reading together for just 20 minutes a day, visiting the library, playing word games,

writing stories, exploring museums, or creating arts and crafts can keep young minds active

while making learning fun.

At RISE Augusta, we encourage families to make learning part of everyday summer adventures.

Every book read, every conversation shared, and every new experience helps children return to

school more confident and ready to succeed.

A little learning all summer long can make a big difference when the school bell rings!
