A Small Victory, A Big Future

When Reid joined our kindergarten class midway through the first semester, he was starting from scratch—literally. Unlike his classmates, he had never been to school before. When we administered the "Words Their Way" assessment, he scored a 0. He couldn’t identify the letter A, didn’t know his shapes or colors, and had never written his name. It was clear that Reid needed extra support, and I knew I had to help him bridge the gap.

We started with the basics. The letter A became our foundation—we traced it, repeated it, and practiced its sound over and over until he could confidently recognize it. From there, we built on his learning, incorporating colors, shapes, and numbers into every moment possible—even during walks to and from the classroom. What seemed like small efforts—pointing out shapes in the hallway, counting steps together—gradually turned into real progress.

Then came the breakthrough. Reid’s iReady score jumped by 50 points—a concrete testament to his hard work and determination. Seeing his confidence grow alongside his skills has been one of the most rewarding experiences of working with RISE Augusta.
